If you’re shopping for a new pool heat pump, there’s a good chance you’ve come across both AquaCal and Madimack. Both companies offer full-inverter pool heat pumps designed to provide better efficiency, quieter operation and more precise temperature control than traditional single-speed heat pumps.

For this comparison, we’re going to focus primarily on the AquaCal TropiCal Inverter Series and the Madimack InverTITAN Series. There isn’t necessarily one winner. The better choice depends on your pool size, climate, desired water temperature and how far into the colder months you want to keep swimming.

Why Choose a Full-Inverter Pool Heat Pump?

A traditional pool heat pump typically operates at full power when the pool needs heat. Once the water reaches the set temperature, the compressor shuts off and starts again when more heat is needed.

A full-inverter heat pump works differently. Instead of constantly running at 100%, it can adjust the speed of the compressor and fan based on how much heating or cooling the pool actually needs. If you’re starting with a cold pool, the heater can run at higher output to bring the water up to temperature. Once the pool gets close to your desired temperature, the inverter can slow down and use less electricity to maintain it. That can mean quieter operation, better efficiency and a more consistent pool temperature.

Both the AquaCal TropiCal Inverter and Madimack InverTITAN use this type of technology.

AquaCal TropiCal Inverter Series

AquaCal has been manufacturing swimming pool heat pumps in Florida since 1981 and is one of the most established names in the industry. The AquaCal TropiCal Inverter lineup includes:

• T70 … 63,000 BTU up to 15,000 gallons
• T100 … 108,000 BTU up to 23,000 gallons
• T130 … 123,000 BTU up to 27,000 gallons

These ratings are based on 80°F air, 80°F pool water and 80% humidity in Boost Mode. All three models use full-inverter technology and provide both heating and cooling.

AquaCal Boost, Smart and Eco Modes

One feature we like about the AquaCal inverter line is the ability to choose how you want the heater to operate.

• Boost Mode is designed to provide maximum heating performance when you want to bring the pool up to temperature faster.
• Eco Mode concentrates more on efficiency and quiet operation.
• Smart Mode automatically adjusts operation depending on how much heating or cooling the pool needs.

This is where inverter technology really starts to make sense. Once your pool reaches its desired temperature, you normally don’t need the heater running at full output. The inverter can reduce compressor and fan speed and simply maintain the temperature.

Under favorable conditions, AquaCal publishes COP ratings above 10 in Eco Mode on some TropiCal Inverter models. Actual efficiency will vary based on outside temperature, humidity, pool temperature, wind, pool size and whether you use a pool cover.

AquaCal T70 vs. T100 vs. T130

• The T70 at 63,000 BTU is the smallest of the three and can be a good option for smaller pools, particularly in warmer climates.
• The T100 at 108,000 BTU provides considerably more heating capacity and can be a good fit for many average-size residential pools.
• The T130 at 123,000 BTU is the model we’d look at for larger pools or situations where additional heating capacity is needed.

But maximum BTUs aren’t the only number you should consider.  If you’re buying a pool heater to extend your swimming season, it’s also important to look at how much heating capacity the unit maintains when the outdoor temperature drops. At a published 50°F outdoor-air test condition, for example, the AquaCal T100 produces approximately 46,000 BTU, while the larger T130 produces approximately 63,000 BTU. That’s a much more useful number if your goal is heating your pool on a 50°F day rather than an 80°F day.

AquaCal PoolSync Wi-Fi Control

Another advantage of the AquaCal TropiCal Inverter is PoolSync. PoolSync gives you Wi-Fi control of compatible AquaCal equipment from your smartphone. You can monitor and control the heater without having to walk out to the equipment pad every time you want to make a temperature adjustment. PoolSync can also provide remote diagnostic information, which can be helpful if you ever have an issue with the heater. For customers who want a modern inverter pool heater with strong smartphone integration, PoolSync is definitely a feature worth considering.

Madimack InverTITAN

Madimack may be a newer name to some pool owners in the United States, but the InverTITAN has quickly become an interesting option in the premium inverter heat-pump category.

The InverTITAN lineup includes:

• InverTITAN 90 … approximately 80,000 BTU up to 20,000 gallons
• InverTITAN 112 … approximately 107,000 BTU up to 25,000 gallons
• InverTITAN 140 … approximately 133,000 BTU up to 35,000 gallons

These outputs are based on 80°F air, 80°F water and 80% humidity.

Like the AquaCal, the InverTITAN uses full-inverter technology that allows the compressor and fan to adjust their operating speed based on demand. It also provides both pool heating and cooling, along with Wi-Fi control.

Madimack InverTITAN Cold-Weather Performance

One of the biggest reasons to consider the Madimack InverTITAN is its cold-weather operating capability.  Madimack publishes an operating air-temperature range down to approximately 14°F.  That’s an impressive number for an air-source pool heat pump, but there’s an important distinction to understand. Just because a heat pump can operate at a very low outdoor temperature doesn’t mean it’s producing its full advertised BTU output at that temperature. All air-source pool heat pumps lose heating capacity as the outdoor temperature falls.

At a 50°F outdoor-air test condition, Madimack publishes approximately:

• InverTITAN 90 … 41,500 BTU 
• InverTITAN 112 … 51,000 BTU 
• InverTITAN 140 … 58,000 BTU

This is why proper sizing becomes especially important if you want to extend your swimming season into colder weather. Someone heating a pool in Florida has very different requirements from someone trying to maintain 84°F water during October or November in Tennessee, North Carolina or other colder climate.

AquaCal vs. Madimack Warranty

Warranty coverage is another important difference between AquaCal and Madimack.

AquaCal TropiCal Inverter Warranty

The current AquaCal TropiCal Inverter warranty provides 3 years of parts and labor coverage. That’s meaningful because both the replacement parts and the labor required for a covered repair are included during that warranty period, subject to AquaCal’s warranty terms and conditions. AquaCal also has an established presence in the U.S. pool industry and an extensive service network.

Madimack InverTITAN Warranty

Madimack offers a different warranty structure with longer coverage on several major components. The current InverTITAN warranty includes 5 years parts and onsite labor, 10 years on the compressor and 25 years on the heat exchanger. That’s an impressive warranty package and one of the InverTITAN’s strongest selling points.

As with any manufacturer’s warranty, coverage is subject to the manufacturer’s registration requirements, installation requirements, exclusions and complete warranty terms. 

Which Is Better for Cold Weather: AquaCal or Madimack?

This is where comparing only the advertised maximum BTU number can get misleading. The Madimack InverTITAN has a very impressive published minimum operating temperature of approximately 14°F. But look at what happens when we compare two of the larger models at a 50°F test condition.

The AquaCal T130 produces approximately 63,000 BTU. The Madimack InverTITAN 140 produces approximately 58,000 BTU.

Under warmer 80°F conditions, however, the InverTITAN 140 has the higher published maximum output. That’s exactly why we don’t recommend choosing a pool heat pump simply because one model has a bigger BTU number on the brochure. Where you live and when you plan to use your pool matter.

Which Is More Energy Efficient?

Both manufacturers have designed these heaters around efficiency. Once your pool approaches the desired temperature, a full-inverter system can reduce compressor and fan speed rather than continuing to operate at maximum output. That’s where a properly sized inverter heat pump can really pay off.

AquaCal publishes particularly strong COP numbers in Eco Mode under favorable conditions, while Madimack’s inverter technology is also designed to reduce power consumption as heating demand decreases. There isn’t one energy-cost number that will apply to every pool. Pool size, outdoor temperature, humidity, desired water temperature, swimming season and operating habits all affect how much electricity a heat pump will use. Using a pool cover can also make a substantial difference by reducing heat loss from the surface of the water.

AquaCal vs. Madimack: Which One Should You Buy?

If you’re looking for a well-established U.S. pool heat pump manufacturer, excellent inverter efficiency, PoolSync Wi-Fi control, strong cold-weather heating performance and a 3-year parts and labor warranty, the AquaCal TropiCal Inverter is a very strong choice.

If cold-weather operating capability and long-term warranty coverage are high on your list, the Madimack InverTITAN deserves a close look. Its published operation down to approximately 14°F and its 25-year heat exchanger, 10-year compressor, 5-year parts labor warranty are significant advantages. But we wouldn’t choose between the two based on a single specification. The best pool heat pump is the one that’s properly sized for your pool and the conditions in which you’re actually going to use it.
